One-Pager — IRA-H Area V Navigation Systems (Lessons 11–12)

VOR — tune, identify, then use

Tune ▶ identify Morse ident ▶ flag OFF. No ident = unusable.
Needle centered + FROM = radial you're on; + TO = bearing to the station. CDI is independent of heading — fly toward the needle.

Intercept & track

Select course ▶ note deflection ▶ turn an intercept angle (≈30°–45°) toward the needle ▶ lead the turn-on.
Wind correction: bracket into the wind until the needle stays centered. Expect oscillation / cone of confusion near the station; TO→FROM flip = station passage.

GPS / RNAV

RNAV flies waypoint-to-waypoint; cross-track error in nm (tightens near the airport). RAIM = integrity; WAAS adds correction/integrity for vertical guidance (LPV).
LEG auto-sequences; OBS/SUSP holds the active fix — brief the mode before each segment. Verify database currency.

DME arcs

Lead onto the arc ~½ nm; “turn ten, twist ten,” bearing pointer near the wingtip; correct toward/away from the station for distance; lead the turn onto final.
GPS distance = over the ground; DME = slant range. GPS may be used in lieu of DME/ADF when the fix is in the current database and the install is approved.
Cross-check the magenta line against raw data & the chart; have a loss-of-RAIM plan.
